Domino’s, Dunkin Donuts finds a new brother in Popeyes!

It is no wonder, why Domino’s entry was a game-changer in India. It was the first of its kind. Domino’s introduced concept like the Cloud Kitchen in India that has become more popular now than ever. It changed the way, Indians consumed Pizza.

Domino’s India is spread across 285 cities with 1,314 outlets. It has recently begun its operations in Bangladesh where it broke the global record in the number of orders in the first week of operations. Not only this, India is currently the biggest market outside the US for Domino’s Pizza. Now, the second revolution was in the Donuts brought up by Dunkin Donuts. Though it has entered India very recently but has quickly become a place with great ambiance to catch up with friends and family and have a hot and cold coffee with some baked donuts.

Dunkin today has its presence across 8 cities having 27 total outlets. An interesting fact is, Donuts offered by Dunkin are 100% Eggless. However, both these Quick-Service-Restaurants have one common thing. They both are brought to you by – Jubilant FoodWorks Limited (JFL).

JFL is listed on NSE and BSE. Presently, it has a market capitalization of ₹38,017Crs and its stock is making a new high. It surged from ₹657 to ₹2,888 in the last five years thereby giving an excellent compounded return of 34.46% annually. And now it’s time for a revolution in the Chicken industry and Jubilant is again at the center of it.

Jubilant FoodWorks Limited has signed a multi-country agreement with Restaurant Brands International Inc. (RBI) to acquire the exclusive rights to operate and sub-license the iconic Popeyes brand in India and neighboring countries. RBI also owns the world’s most prominent and iconic quick-service restaurant brands – Tim Hortons and Burger King.

Popeyes is known for 45-years of rich heritage and a plate full of flavourful authentic food served over 3,400 restaurants spread across 25 countries. Popeyes offers iconic Louisiana-style chicken, marinated for 12 hours in bold Louisiana seasonings, then hand batter and slowly cooked to make it the juiciest and crispiest chicken. Its chicken-Sandwich is a smash-hit in the USA as it single-handedly drove RBI’s sales-growth by 34% in one quarter and became the fast-food story of 2019.

So far, the deal looks lucrative and a perfect addition to JFL’s portfolio which will provide further impetus to JFL’s growth and strengthen its market position. However, it will be really interesting to see the fact that how Popeyes stands and markets itself in a place where the competition is intense and the likes of KFC, Burger-King, and MacD have understood the nerves of the Indian population over the years. Secondly, will JFL also tweak Popeyes’s menu by including vegetarian options to suit the taste buds of the Vegetarian-populated country like MacD and KFC did?

In the past, Jubilant has been able to taste the success with Domino’s hitting the right chord but will history repeat itself? Well, only time will tell.
