27th January 2020, A 20-year-old from Kerala became the first person to get infected with COVID 19 in India and today India has 2,00,000+ active cases with a total caseload of 1 crore plus.

World News

The global death toll from COVID-19 crossed 2 million on 15th January 2020 crossing the population of Brussels, Mecca, Minsk, or Vienna, and is more than the number of people who died in 1947 during the partition of India and Pakistan. A quarter of the death toll is contributed by places like Iran, India, Mexico, and Brazil. Experts believe that the figures of death given by the government agencies of countries are yet significantly lower than the real number.

According to WHO the herd immunity needs 70% of the world population to be vaccinated which seems difficult to achieve this year. Nearly 4,00,000 Americans are dead with average cases still at 2,50,000 per day.

Vaccine

While the number of cases and death are still high, vaccines have started rolling out in many countries. India too will start with the vaccination from 16th January 2020 giving priority to 30 million healthcare workers and frontline workers. More than 61,000 program managers, 2,00,000 vaccinators, and 3,70,000 other vaccine team members have been trained so far for vaccination.

Serum Institute has 50 million vaccines packed in their Pune plant and has another 50 million ready to be packed. The vaccine will be available for those above 18 years of age and won’t be available for pregnant and lactating women.  Co-Win app developed by the central government will be used at the back end as of now to maintain a track record of those who are getting vaccinated. The app is made for people to register for vaccination but is not yet made available on either Android Play-store or Apple App Store. Many websites claim to have APK files of the same which are false claims and do not carry the actual application.

Norway hasn’t had a great result of the vaccine with 23 people dead after getting vaccinated. Autopsy suggests the fatal reactions among 13 of the common side effects. Most of the people were elderly and the Norwegian agency claimed that the vaccine might be too risky for the very old and terminally ill.

The dark cloud of COVID 19 which seemed to have left our world is still there just a bit lighter than before. It’s better to take all the precautions as we still have COVID 19 present in our society.
